Welcome to the official website of the Embassy of Afghanistan in Brussels, Belgium. This website offers a diversity of information about Afghanistan, news on different activities we are organising or supporting, and details about services our embassy offers. Our embassy bilaterally represents Afghanistan to the Kingdom of Belgium, Netherlands, Greece, and Luxemburg. In addition, our embassy multilaterally represents Afghanistan to the European Union, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Afghanistan in partnership with Belgium, Netherlands, Greece, and Luxemburg enjoys an outstanding relationship in all aspects. We share many political, social and human values. Our visions and ideas concerning the international cooperation, preserving of peace and sustained economical development are similar. Our embassy is striving to strengthen cordial relations between our countries in the fields of political, security, economic, trade, cultural and social. We greatly appreciate the contribution of men and women from Belgium, Netherlands, Greece, and Luxemburg to the NATO military efforts in Afghanistan and their contributions as donor nations for the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

Together Afghans and NATO-ISAF forces are fighting side by side at the forefront of the global war against terrorism. Today, while our common interest in fighting terrorism and solidifying peace and stability forms the basis of the close Afghan-NATO partnership, our shared desire to build a democratic state that guarantees the safety and security of its citizens, promotes democracy, human rights, rule of the law and provides for sustained economic growth reinforces the cooperation between Afghanistan and NATO. On 6th September 2006, in the presence of the North Atlantic Council, President Hamid Karzai and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer signed the “Declaration by NATO and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan”, setting out a Framework for Enduring Co-operation in Partnership. During the Summit of NATO-ISAF heads of states and governments in Bucharest in April 2008, with participation of President Karzai, Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and Javier Solana from the EU, NATO-ISAF nations reaffirmed their long-term commitment to Afghanistan. There are currently 51350 troops from 41 NATO-ISAF countries in Afghanistan risking their lives to make Afghanistan a safer place to live. NATO is also helping train and equips our Afghan National Army. In addition, there are 26 NATO-ISAF nations Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in Afghanistan which NATO leads the military component of them. The PRTs are helping the Afghan provincial authorities and people to improve security, supporting good governance and assisting development and reconstruction.

The EU and Afghanistan are committed to a secure, stable, free, prosperous and democratic Afghanistan. The EU is the second largest donor to Afghanistan. EU aid has been used for humanitarian purposes as well as to priority reconstruction and development efforts in supporting good governance and democracy in Afghanistan. On 16 November 2005, the EU and Afghanistan adopted a Joint Declaration setting out a new partnership. This Joint Declaration outlines increased co-operation, based on Afghan ownership, across a range of areas. It also establishes a regular political dialogue, with annual meetings at Ministerial level and reaffirms the EU’s long-term commitment to Afghanistan.

We welcome all businesses and non-profit institutions to participate further in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. The Afghan Constitution and the Afghan National Development Strategy strongly supports and promotes private sector investment in Afghanistan. Afghanistan offers tremendous opportunities for direct investment as well as civic work.

We invite all Afghan expatriates to participate in rebuilding of their homeland by bringing back their professional expertise and skills. Afghan expatriates have made significant contributions in investing and rebuilding our national institutions. There are many opportunities both in the Afghan government and in the private sector for educated and professional expatriates. Please contact us if you are interested in working or investing in Afghanistan.

Sincerely,
Dr. Zia Nezam
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Afghanistan
